The Second Annual 3D Throwdown at MCRC by Jim Kitt
RC pilots came to share their enthusiasm for 3D flying at the Second Annual 3D Throwdown at MCRC. Held this year on Saturday, January 28th the weather was accommodating at 74 degrees and sunny.
As MCRC 3D pilots spread the word by email and on the RC Groups 3D Flying discussions thread, pilots began arriving early from all over Florida. It was a perfect day, and MCRC was a wonderful host for the club’s first major event of the year.
Here is a photo recap of the event (click on images to enlarge):
Team Extreme (Extreme Flight RC) pilot, Doc Austin (Austin Brammer), helps out club member Maynard Troyer, set up his Extreme Flight RC 60 inch Extra 300 EXP. He later flew the plane while Maynard, and the rest of us, held our breath.
The flight line was packed with 3D and extreme aerobatic airframes from Extreme Flight RC and 3D Hobby Shop.
The Edge 540T, Extra 300, and the Slick 540, were the airframes of choice for most of the pilots.
In all, over 50 3D and extreme aerobatic RC airplanes were on hand.
The new turf runway was showcased in this event. Considering the light airframes and small wheels on many of the 3D planes, the laser-leveled field provided safe takeoffs and landings all day.
For lunch, the MCRC volunteers contributed to the fun by manning the grill and the concessions stand. Frank is always a common site when help is needed at the grill.
We’re all happy that he knows what he’s doing, too! Dave, Dave, and Bill provided the quick and friendly service inside.
Families came to enjoy the flying, camaraderie, and to watch others show off their skills. Nothing was more apparent than the advanced skills of the young pilots.

Some early morning setup and repair is always needed. Got some thin CA, Randy?

Of course, in a big operation, you have to expect some losses.
What do you mean, “The retracts failed?”
Oops! Doc showed everyone how to do an inverted landing. The MXS was not very happy about it.

Here’s Tom coming back from a successful flight on something a little bigger... Frank’s 78 inch Extreme Flight RC Extra 300.
Tom, MCRC's 2011 Top Gun, and Skylor, our 2011 Most Improved Pilot, give the old guys advice on 3D maneuvers.
Bill and Vern relax while watching Tom (red EXP), Shawn (foamie), and Doc (blue EXP), huckin’ it up at midfield. Don’t worry guys. They will learn how to fly straight lines someday.
3D Helicopter action was provided by the skillful Luis Espinosa. If the applause meter counts for anything, Louis and his heli won first prize.
3D Foamie fun was had by many. Here is a new plane by TwistedHobbys.com.
And Gravitycheat (Shawn) explains the "catch and release" program for foamies.

Tom takes a minute to trim out Skylor’s new 48” Extreme Flight RC Edge 540T.

Skylor’s Dad, George, created this beautiful image of MCRC on a really fun, exciting, and memorable day of flying, and sharing the MCRC experience.

We'll see you all back here again next year!
